I’ve helped thousands of Indian students get the IELTS scores they need. I work with them every day and there are some common issues that come up again and again.

I like to try and spot patterns when I’m teaching IELTS and there are some definite commonalities that emerge when working with Indian students.

Please note that not all Indian students are the same. You are all individuals and should prepare for your test in a way that takes your individuality into account.

However, there are some trends and reasons why and here they are:

1. Pronunciation Issues

Most Indian students have wonderful fluency in English. However, many of them can speak too quickly.

When this is combined with ‘accent interference’ it can cause difficulty for the listener.

2. Repetition

Many Indian schools seem to teach their students that you can never repeat a single word in the whole writing test.

They also tell their students that you cannot repeat ideas.

3. Using ‘high-level’ language

There also seems to be an emphasis on using complex language but not on accuracy.

4. Focusing on the trivial many, not the essential few

All students have this problem but I hear it from my Indian students more than most there.

There is a tendency to believe rumour and worry about things that have no effect on your score.

I find your style full of insult to asians… You too could have used a bit better words while answering questions and the way you laugh after reading a question is so weird. Your answers like "l really dont know what you mean and then you think what to answer"

Hi Chris.. I am struggling in the speaking skill. Other 3 I'm still better. I know the problem that I face while speaking and it is I'm searching for vocabulary while speaking, no I am not looking for high level Vocab but even for normal routine words I tends to forget while speaking and another problem that I have learned after listening to my recordings is there is no fluency and cohesion and coherence… I take pauses after every 2 to 3 words… I focus on building up ideas I'm lost in searching for words and so I don't speak fluently.. Although my writing skill is much better because there I have time to plan first and while planning I list down the Vocab that I want to use or sometimes naturally it comes in my mind while writing but while speaking it's really tough for me to sound natural… Many of my friends has also given me the same feedback that there are unnatural pauses and breaks in my conversation… Could you please help me how can I overcome this fear of speaking and how can I improve my speaking while sounding natrral
